Book Recommendations for Professional Illustrators.

Business Legal Forms for Illustrators by Ted Crawford:

Mr. Ted Crawford is a legal leader, graduate of Columbia Law School, and author of serval books for the benefit of creatives. “Business Legal Forms for Illustrators” is co-published by Mr. Crawford and the Graphic Artists Guild. Currently, I am the owner of the “Fourth Edition” of the guide and it has served me well on an editorial project from estimate to invoice.

Most impressive for unintimidating writing, the book is a complete resource for any designer, illustrator, or artist wishing to copyright, license, and most otherwise commercialize their work. The guide features 29 forms for use which are also downloadable via internal link for easy customization.

HBR Guide to Better Business Writing by Bryan A. Garner:

Bryan A. Garner sets the standard for legal writing in and out of the courtroom. When it comes to writing clearly, Mr. Garner is the authority. HBR Guide to Better Business Writing (Engage Readers, Tighten and Brighten, Make Your Case) provides the blueprint for the art of appeal. For me, the book is an obvious choice for any illustrator serious about the art of business: Communication.

The Business of Being an Artist by Daniel Grant

Daniel Grant is an American arts journalist, author, and practical expert on the aspects of being a visual artist. Here, he provides for a comprehensive but cautionary approach to the business of art. The handbook provides guidance from exhibiting to marketing and promotion and even gives credence to the emotional aspects of talent.
